This summer will determine whether this ranking is far too high or laughably low. For now, so it ought to be just right.
The’Bockers are nearly a blank canvas. The Kristaps Porzingis deadline deal erased all long-term obligations. Their highest guaranteed salary for next season is Frank Ntilikina’s $4.9 million. No dream is too big for the Knicks right now. Since Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale broke down, it’s not impossible to find a situation in which Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis all call Madison Square Garden house next year.
Is it likely? Not in the least. But when the Knicks have all their built-in market benefits, plus loads of cap room and a good shot at securing the No. 1 choice, that is an army of resources many clubs would struggle to match.
There’s also an underground flooring to consider.
Cap space might not imply Irving or Durant. Perhaps It’s Kemba Walker and Khris Middleton. Perhaps it’s no one. Considering that the revamped lottery chances, the Knicks might wind up drafting fourth or fifth. So, rather than Zion Williamson (along with a potential path to Davis), possibly the draft haul is just Cam Reddish or Jarrett Culver.
New York has some youth in place, although its possible remains in flux. While Mitchell Robinson looks before schedule and Allonzo Trier has been a huge surprise, Kevin Knox looks predictably raw. Additionally, Dennis Smith Jr. is far from a sure thing, also Ntilikina’s prognosis is cloudy at best.
